Brief
Create a book cover with water media.
For this project, I created a book cover for Edgar Allan Poe’s completed works out of water media. For my materials, I used water color paint and acrylic inks. I painted the skull which I used to represent the theme of death that most of Poe’s work embodies. I then protected the skull with liquid resist and placed droplets of black and red ink around the skull and spread it with water to get the effect that I did. This was to represent a sickness or virus that’s spreading. To get the lettering for “POE,” I used a paint brush and brushed on liquid resist before I painted the skill and background. Once I got my illustration where I wanted it, I scanned it into my computer and added the other information such as the synopsis, reviews, and the bar code.
The second part of this project was to create a spread for one of his poems or short stories. This part also had to be done in water media and not only relate to the chosen piece but it also has to relate back to the cover. The piece I chose was “The Raven” and the reason I chose this is because it’s one of his poems I’m most familiar with.
